Richard Loseby

Richard Loseby was convicted at the age of 17 for stealing and transported to Australia for 7 years, arriving in 1823. After serving his sentence, he married an ex-convict and purchased land at Bong Bong in 1831 and in 1832, he took over the license of the Argyle Inn (Briars Inn today) at Bong Bong. It is reported he “walked” the first Royal Mail 120 miles from Picton to the Goulburn district in 1825. Later, several of his brothers joined him and their headstones are distinctive. Be sure to read the epitaph on his headstone.
